Ancient scrolls representing the lost books mentioned in the Bible: Book of Jasher, Wars of the Lord, and royal annals

Books the Bible Quotes — But We No Longer Have

The Bible openly mentions several important writings that did not become part of the final canon. These “lost books” include poetic collections, military records, and official royal histories. Their references give us valuable insight into how Scripture was compiled and what kind of history remains outside the biblical text.

The Book of Jasher (The Book of the Upright)

Referenced twice in the Old Testament:

  • Joshua 10:13 — After the sun and moon stood still during battle: “Is this not written in the Book of Jasher?”
  • 2 Samuel 1:18 — Introducing David’s lament over Saul and Jonathan.

Jasher was apparently an ancient collection of heroic poems and songs celebrating Israel’s upright leaders and great victories. It functioned like a national songbook or anthology of righteous deeds. Biblical writers quoted it the same way we might cite a well-known historical document today.

The Book of the Wars of the Lord

Mentioned in Numbers 21:14 during Israel’s wilderness journey:

“Therefore it is said in the Book of the Wars of the LORD, ‘Waheb in Suphah and the ravines of the Arnon...’”

This appears to have been an early record — possibly poetic — of Israel’s battles and God’s victories as they entered the Promised Land. It served as a kind of war diary or victory anthology from the time of Moses.

The Royal Annals and Chronicles

The most frequently cited lost sources are the official court records:

  • The Book of the Annals (or Chronicles) of the Kings of Israel
  • The Book of the Annals of the Kings of Judah
  • The Book of the Acts of Solomon
  • Records of prophets such as Nathan, Gad, and Iddo the Seer

The writers of 1–2 Kings repeatedly say, “As for the other events of King X’s reign… are they not written in the book of the annals of the kings…?” These were detailed historical records kept by royal scribes covering politics, wars, building projects, and daily court life.

What These References Teach Us About the Bible’s Compilation

The existence of these lost books reveals important truths:

  • Selective Inspiration: The biblical authors researched and drew from earlier reliable sources but included only what served God’s redemptive message. Not every valuable historical document became Scripture.
  • Transparency: By naming their sources, the writers show honesty and grounding in real events rather than invention.
  • Purpose Over Completeness: The Bible was never meant to be a full encyclopedia of Israelite history. It focuses on covenant relationship, faithfulness, judgment, and redemption.
  • Missing History vs. Sufficient Revelation: We lack many political and military details, but we have everything we need for faith and godliness. Archaeology and other ancient records often confirm the biblical framework.

Why These Lost Books Matter Today

References to Jasher, the Wars of the Lord, and the royal annals remind us that the Bible emerged from a rich, living literary culture in ancient Israel. God sovereignly guided the selection process so that what remains equips His people across the ages.

While we may never recover the full texts of these lost books, their mention increases our confidence in the trustworthiness of Scripture — it is not a fabricated tale but a carefully curated witness to God’s actions in history.

O Yah, the Most High, Sovereign Lord of heaven and earth, we come before You with gratitude and wonder.

We thank You for the honest references in Your Word to the Book of Jasher, the Book of the Wars of the Lord, and the royal annals of Israel and Judah. These mentions remind us that Scripture was not written in isolation but emerged from a rich tapestry of real historical records and writings.

Father, we praise You for Your sovereign guidance over the compilation of the Bible. Thank You that You preserved exactly what we need for faith, godliness, and salvation, even while many other valuable documents were not included in the final canon.

Help us to trust Your wisdom in what was kept and what was set aside. Deepen our confidence in the reliability and sufficiency of Your Word. Remove any doubt caused by the existence of “lost books,” and instead let it strengthen our faith that You have given us everything necessary for life and reverence.

Grant us hearts that treasure the Scriptures we do have. Stir in us a hunger to study, understand, and obey Your revealed truth. May we never take for granted the precious gift of Your written Word handed down through the centuries.

We ask all this in the mighty name of Yahshua the Messiah.

Amein.
