Pre-Release / Hype Phase

The Modern Warfare 4 multiplayer reveal trailer dropped and it looked super sweet. So, as usual… I shared it out: “Have ya seen the new Call of Duty – Modern Warfare 4: Multiplayer reveal trailer yet? Check it out.” Pure fire. That classic Infinity Ward sauce had me locked in. Even threw out the “Modern Warfare 4 🫦💦” energy.

Preorder was in. This was supposed to be the one. This was the one that took 4 years to make. This was the reason that we got short changed with a Modern Warfare III made by Sledgehammer Games instead of being made by Infinity Ward like they were supposed to do.

I also shut down the doom and gloom talk early by saying: If anybody believes the hype about Call of Duty not making any more games after MW4 if it fails doesn't understand how much these games actually make per cycle.

Beta Launch Chaos

Beta goes live… and nobody can get in.

“Modern Warfare 4 Beta is live, and no one can access it. 💀👀”

“Where’s that Beta at, doggy? No one can access it.”

“No one can get on MW4.”

Then the preload comedy:

“The Modern Warfare 4 preload didn’t preload when it preloaded. You have to download the beta by going to the store listing on the home screen for any of this to even work.”

PS5 "downloaded the beta, but it didn’t download the beta. Wow.”

It wasn’t just me. Servers were slammed, queues formed, Xbox players got stuck on “checking for updates” until they manually installed the Campaign/Multiplayer/Warzone packs, Battle.net pre-downloads glitched hard enough that @CODUpdates had to acknowledge and push a fix, and some players hit soft-locks in the Mobility Course. Classic Activision day-one energy: every year the trailer hits, every year the servers and installers fight back.

Their history of a smooth launch is pretty much nonexistent and players expressed peak fatigue when the launch flopped as hard as it did due to the blatant preloading glitch.

Actually Playing the Beta

Once inside, the movement and overall feel? Best it’s ever been. Game feels great. Shot back at the haters with “Shut ur dirty mouth, this is the best CoD ever.”

But the gunfights…

This is where the fatigue started setting in. The gamer thumbs started screaming for a break, and the frustration from lopsided gameplay started creeping its way back in after a 4 year break from Infinity Ward games. It was discovered that the weapon balance wildly fluctuates. The damage felt like it favors certain players and hinders you on purpose, resulting in back-to-back tasteless WTF moments. The gun battles started becoming ultimately cringe and incredibly unrealistic as usual.

“I am running into gun battle after gun battle where their damage is faster and superior every time unless they’re not facing me, no matter what gun I am using. And even then, if they turn around and face me, instant death.”

"Shot a guy point-blank in the throat with an AR… and I died. Not him."

Another user explains: "Four separate damage zones + four different range profiles = pure inconsistency." My reply? "Complete ass."

I wasn’t alone in the frustration. Across the community the same patterns kept surfacing: footsteps so loud and directional that Ninja felt mandatory, TTK that could feel blisteringly fast or wildly inconsistent (some clips showing near-instant deaths), bloated attachment cons forcing playstyles, spawn issues, and the familiar SBMM/lobby-disbanding debate flaring up again. The movement and overall feel still had a lot of people calling it the best CoD has felt in years — until the gunfights reminded everyone why the fatigue exists.

Post-Play Fatigue Hit Hard

After the whole debacle where I was locked out of the game for an hour due to the preload glitch, and then after 2 hours and 49 mins of solid game time, the fatigue started setting in. The unbalanced, unrealistic and unfair game play from Infinity Ward's past started rearing its ugly head. The 4 year gaming cycle started to become an apparent major joke.

It was as if they had blown off their entire development time and came with this weak bs instead of fully embracing the extra development time they were granted. The question becomes: Why did you even ask for extra time if you were going to come this weak after 4 years?

The main gripe I have had this entire time is that there are no single player game modes other than their usual weak campaign, with Vanguard's campaign being the only exception to that statement. Compared to Vanguard, all other Call of Duty campaigns are stale and easily dismissable. Hence why their multiplayer modes have been such a huge hit during their brand's entire life cycle.

The problem arises because the original Modern Warfare 3 introduced Survival, which is a single player game mode with maximum replay value. And this year, there is no such thing, just a weak campaign as usual. It's like they just don't care anymore.

Overall Reaction

After hours of testing the new Beta for Modern Warfare, I had some choice reactions:

“Prolly gonna cancel the preorder after this.”

“I’m just like, wow, I am so over this game. It’s the same imbalanced bs every single year with every @CallofDuty and I’m so tired of it. Max fatigue & cringe, @InfinityWard. Not happy. 👎🏻”

Same cycle. Same complaints. And the same disappointment after the trailer's hype train high wore off. The game feels incredible until the newness completely wears off and that's when the gun fights feel abysmal instead of just equaling satisfying gameplay. As soon as you start remembering how bullshit all of the old gunfights you've had over the years were, that's when nostalgia turns sour, and the old ghosts of CoD imbalance rears its ugly head.

By Day 2 Infinity Ward was already responding. They publicly listed the first priorities: footstep audio tuning, turning map voting back on, weapon balance adjustments, bug fixes, and more content incoming. Classic beta cycle — the community screams, the patch notes start flying. Whether it sticks or just resets the clock for the next round of complaints is the real question after four years of development.

The Hype is Dying

The fatigue is real. The trailer hype, the access chaos, the brief “this is the best CoD ever” high, the rapid crash into imbalance and fatigue — that part is complete for me. What’s still unfolding is whether the extra development time actually delivers lasting changes once the open beta hits and the real patches land, or if we’re just watching the same nostalgia-to-letdown loop with better movement and that weak campaign mission no one seems excited to play thrown in.

For now, especially for me, the preorder is on thin ice. My thumbs are tired, my frustration over cheaters (which is still a thing) is not serving me anymore, and the cycle of patches and excuses after 4 years of development feels as familiar as ever, and it's really not good at all. I'm so tired of fighting other people on these games because the cheating is so exhausting for legit players. Between that, Modern Warfare 4 not having any awesome co-op modes from Infinity Ward (Extinction was not awesome), and getting burned by Activision, that I'm starting to think that a Black Friday sale is what I should wait for before fully committing to paying full price for a game as lackluster as this one is.
