Golden State Gavin's Reading Riddle: "I Can't Read" One Day, "I Read Thousands" the Next – Pick a Lie, Governor!

The Governor's Flip-Flop on Literacy Is Peak California Absurdity

Alright, let's cut through the nonsense. Gavin Newsom recently bragged to a prisoner that he personally reads every single parole application – "thousands" of them, he claimed, pouring hundreds of hours into case files like some hyper-caffeinated law student. But rewind just a bit, and the same guy is on a book tour in Atlanta, telling a crowd he's "just like you" because he's a "960 SAT guy" who "cannot read a speech" due to his lifelong dyslexia. You've never seen him read from a teleprompter, he says – he just wings it because reading prepared text is beyond him.

So which version are we supposed to buy? The one where he's suddenly a voracious reader devouring mountains of legal documents, or the one where he literally can't read a speech off paper? The contradiction is glaring. One minute he's powerless over parole decisions (per his press office's frantic tweets blaming an "independent" board), the next he's the hands-on super-reader personally vetting every case. And now we're adding a third layer: the guy who admits he struggles to read aloud can't possibly be plowing through thousands of dense parole packets unless someone's feeding him CliffNotes via earpiece.

This isn't just hypocritical – it's ridiculous. If he truly "can't read" prepared material because of dyslexia, how does he manage the executive-level paperwork required to run the world's fifth-largest economy? Governors sign bills, review budgets, issue executive orders – all involving reading complex text. Yet somehow, when it suits the narrative, he's illiterate enough to bond with a crowd over low test scores, but literate enough to claim personal oversight of parole reviews. The selective superpower is impressive, if nothing else.

As for why the requirements to become governor are so lax – spoiler: there basically aren't any meaningful ones in California. You need to be 30 years old, a U.S. citizen for five years, and a state resident for five years. No literacy test, no IQ minimum, no proof you can read a bill without help. The framers figured voters would sort that out at the ballot box. Clearly, that system has its flaws when a guy can joke about not reading while holding the state's highest office and then pivot to claiming he reads everything under the sun. It's not a bug; it's the feature of a low-bar entry point designed for broad access, not elite competence.

At the end of the day, one of these statements is almost certainly exaggerated for political theater. Either he's downplaying his reading struggles for relatability points, or he's massively overstating his personal involvement in parole decisions to look tough on crime. Or maybe both are stretches in service of whatever audience he's facing that day. Either way, the flip-flopping is exhausting – and Californians deserve better than a governor who can't keep his own story straight.
