The Archons • Business as Usual

September 02, 2026

Act 1: The Morning Brief
The Archon family kitchen. That traditionally wholesome 1950s perfect family glow. Reginald adjusts his tie in the mirror while Vera packs lunches with surgical precision. Junior and Pixie sit at the table, feet swinging, looking picture-perfect.
REGINALD

Another beautiful day in the human experiment, my excellent family! Remember the quarterly target: keep the baseline anxiety elevated but sustainable. No early harvests. We want them productive enough to keep suffering throughout tomorrow, too.

VERA

Of course, hun. I’ll be on the switchboard all morning. Nothing quite like a perfectly polite administrative assistant who just… can’t seem to transfer anyone correctly that really gets them going on the other end, dear.

REGINALD

Oh, I agree

JUNIOR

And we’ll be at school. My lunch table’s already seeded with last week’s rumor and sprouting. Recess should be delicious. I can't wait to have my first scoop of that good old anxiety cream.

PIXIE

(impeccably adorable smile) I brought extra stickers. The kind that fall off halfway through the day. Tee-hee. I'm certain they'll mourn over those.

VERA

Ahh, I can smell the sweet aroma of freshly baked sorrow already.

PIXIE

(bright/excited) Mmm, tasty!

Reginald grins hugely. They all flash that classic perfect family smile with tilted heads in awe of each other. The moment the last human neighbor’s car pulls away, their expressions sharpen into quiet, collective hunger.
Act 2: Corporate Harmony
Inside the Arkonauts Realty office building Vera and Reginald routinely work at, Vera answers phones and Reginald is the Real Estate Broker. Invisible golden-red vapor is already rising from the morning's hectic commute.
REGINALD

(into phone, warm/professional) Absolutely, the property is still available… oh wait… I’m so sorry. Looks like it just went under contract about… five minutes ago… tragic timing, really.

Reginald purses his lips to the side while thinking.
REGINALD

Shall I put you on the waitlist for the next one? Or should I just look around for another one?

Reginald waits and then smirks.
REGINALD

Yes, that is basically starting from scratch again. But, the good thing is that we already know what you want. Well, that is… unless there's anything else that you'd like for me to add to the list of features that you're looking for in a place. Oh, yeah. Uh huh. Oh, sure… What else? Yeah? Oh, that sounds great. Oh, yeah, yeah… yeah. Of course. No, keep going. I'm jotting this all down.

Notepad shows a crude drawing of random doodles. Taps pen on notepad.
REGINALD

(scoffing) Oh, sure. Oh, yeah. Yeah! Okay! Anything else? Okay, well… consider it done. Oh, yeah. Of course. I'll find the perfect place for you in no time. Uh huh. Alright. Well… I'll perform another search with all of your criteria involved this time and see what all I can (clears throat) dig up for you. Okay… alright. Ah—bye bye.

Reginald taps his bluetooth earpiece to end the call. His face twists into pure satisfaction.
REGINALD

(softly) That’s three deals “almost closed” before lunch. The collective hope-to-crush ratio is looking excellent. I can't wait to tell Vera.

Downstairs, Vera’s phone glows with incoming calls. She picks up her headset and answers.
VERA

(bright) Good morning, thank you for calling! One moment while I try that extension again… oh dear, it seems to be ringing busy. Have you tried emailing? Sometimes that works better.

She transfers the caller into a dead loop, then another, then “accidentally” drops them. Each time a human sighs or mutters, her eyes briefly flash with predatory delight before the next cheerful greeting.
VERA

(licking her lips) They’re starting to believe the system is just naturally broken. Beautiful.

At exactly 11:47, Reginald “happens” to walk past Vera’s desk while a particularly frustrated employee is mid-complaint. Both Archons smile supportively at the human.
REGINALD

Tough morning, huh? Hang in there.

VERA

We’re all in this together!

The second the employee turns away, the two Archons exchange a tiny, knowing look. The loosh vapor between them thickens.
Act 3: Recess Protocol
Schoolyard. Junior and Pixie are at opposite ends of the yard, projecting perfect childhood innocence. Around them, the other kids argue. Golden steam rises from every minor injustice.
JUNIOR

(loud enough for his group) Wow, did you guys hear what someone said about the group project? Crazy, right? I mean, I’d never say something like that… but someone definitely did. Just outrageous.

Three kids immediately turn on each other. Junior’s wholesome smile never wavers. A whole argument starts. The kids all turn towards the drama.
JUNIOR

(sinisterly) Social hierarchy recalibration complete. Fear of exclusion is running hot today.

Across the yard, Pixie skips up to a quiet kid carefully coloring.
PIXIE

(sweet as pie) Your drawing is so pretty! Can I see? …Oops!

The page “accidentally” tears.
PIXIE

Oh no… I’m so sorry. Maybe you can start over?

The child’s face falls. Pixie’s expression flips for half a second into pure delight before snapping back to concerned innocence. The bell rings. Junior runs by. Pixie notices.
PIXIE

Wait!

Pixie runs to catch up. Junior slows down.
PIXIE

I got small tears with big loosh. The little ones recharge so surprisingly fast.

JUNIOR

Dad says consistency beats intensity. Keep them just frustrated enough to never quite figure out why everything feels slightly off.

Act 4: End-of-Day Harvest Report
Late afternoon. Reginald and Vera secretly reconvene in the break room of the office building. A brief shimmer forms. Junior and Pixie appear after traveling through a stargate.
VERA

(surprised) Hi, kids.

REGINALD

(cheerful) What a productive day, everyone! Just look at all this loosh. The real estate side is humming. How were the phones, honey?

VERA

Wonderful, dear. I introduced three new “temporary system glitches” and one completely fictional company policy.

REGINALD

Haha!

VERA

They’ll be citing it as gospel by Friday.

REGINALD

What about you, squirt?

JUNIOR

School’s running a solid surplus. Two friend groups fractured, one kid is convinced that the teacher hates him for no reason, and the rumor about the group project is already self-sustaining.

REGINALD

Excellent.

VERA

And you?

PIXIE

(giggling) The stickers I brought to school worked perfectly. Half the class is low-key devastated and doesn’t even know why.

A coworker peeks in, looking harried. All four Archons instantly beam at him with pure neighborly warmth.
STEVE

Man, the copier is acting up again. Wait, why are there kids in here?

REGINALD

(smirks, tilts, one eyes) Bring your kid to work day.

STEVE

Oh.

Steve shrugs, forces a smile, and leaves. The family’s faces drop the masks the instant the door closes.
REGINALD

(soft, satisfied) Look at them. Still blaming the coincidences… never the pattern.

VERA

Because the pattern is us.

REGINALD

Well, that… and we are very good at making everything look like it's not our faults.

PIXIE

Of course!

JUNIOR

Best family business in the seventh dimension.

They all share a long, quiet, predatory smile as another wave of human frustration rises through the building. The kids return to school through the stargate, and a coworker walks in right after. The Archons flash huge smiles. The coworker grabs sugar packets and leaves. Their smiles wipe into cruel grins. Outside, the sun sets on another perfectly ordinary day.
Refreshing...
